Why change your insert window seal?

The doors of wood heaters are manufactured to be waterproof and optimize the heat supply from the fire. The air must essentially pass through the lower part of the door, thanks to an adjustable flap to manage the draft of the fire.

Managing waterproofing is an essential element in the proper functioning of your insert. Door seals therefore play a very important role in carrying out this process. Over time and depending on the frequency of use of your insert, your seals will deteriorate and their seal will gradually disappear. It is then necessary to replace its seal, just as it is sometimes necessary to change its insert window .

The importance of a completely sealed heater

Having a fully waterproof device guarantees optimal draft performance and therefore better heating quality. Your insert no longer loses air, it also consumes less wood. A well-insulated insert will also emit less smoke and odors, while remaining protected from dirt and deposits for longer.

The sealing of your heating appliance is also an important element for your safety. A poorly insulated insert can release fine particles, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and other components presenting risks to your health, or even asphyxiation for the inhabitants of your home.

It is therefore essential to regularly check the insulation of your wood heating appliance. When in doubt, replace your door seal. If you think the problem is more serious, carry out a smoke leak test with a professional, who can test your entire device.

Check the tightness of the door seal

When your door seal begins to lose its sealing properties, certain signs of wear appear:

  • the fiber of the joint frays
  • the insert window darkens more and more quickly
  • the door slams by itself when your insert is in operation

To effectively test the tightness of your insert door, simply use a sheet of A4 paper.

Place the sheet between the door and the insert, making it extend halfway, and close. Slowly pull the sheet upwards:

  • if the foil remains stuck, your seal is still functioning normally
  • if the sheet moves easily between the 2 walls, your seal is no longer watertight and must therefore be replaced.
